abstractWalchia (Walchia) jiangxiensis, sp. nov.
Body of the living larvae light yellow in color. Unengorged specimen 271.0µ long and 198.0µ wide. Galeal setae nude. Palpal setation N/N/N.N.N/4B. Palpal claw apparently trifurcate. Scutum somewhat pentagonal, with a papilla-like dorsal process extending backward to reach the second row of dorsal setae. Scutal surface covered with numerous fine punctations. Sensillae clavate-shaped, 22.8µ in length. Standard measurements on the average of 24 specimens as follows (in micron): AW 32.0, PW 34.7, SB 27.1, ASB 16.3, PSB 58.2, SD 74.5, AP 32.0, AL 26.8, PL 28.6, S 22.8. Eyes 1+1, without ocular shield. Dorsal setae usually 34 in number, arranged in 2-6-6-2-6-6-4-2, 2-6-6-2-6-6-5-2, 2-6-6-2-6-6-4-4-2, 2-6-6-2-6-6-4-2-1. Sternal setae 2+2. Coxal setae 1-1-1. Ventral setae after the coxa III about 50 in number. Length of legs including coxae being I 168.0, II 150.0 and III 182.6µ respectively. Specialized setae of legs shown in fig. 5.
Holotype, larva, from the ear of Apodemus agrarius, Jiangxi, May 1974; paratypes 23, 2 collected with the holotype, 21 from the ears of Rattus fulvescens, Rattus norvegicus, Apodemus agrarius and Rattus flavipectus, Jiangxi, August 1978. All the specimens are deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Jiangxi Medical College.
The present species is similar to Walchia morobensis (Gunter 1939) and Walchia neosinensis Hsu et Wen 1956, but readily distinguished from them by the number of eyes and palpal claw, setae on palpal tarsus and the shape of scutum.
