abstractThree new species and two new records of the genus Siteroptes are described and figured, namely S. qinghaiensis Su, sp. nov., S. triticolae Su, sp. nov., S. huangshuiensis Su, sp. nov., S. avenae Müller and S. reniformis Krantz. The mites, as vectors of plant diseases, are all associated with ear rot of grasses and grains, and each of them lives symbiotically with a certain fungus. A key of seven species is appended.
All type specimens are deposited in the Qinghai Institute of Biology.
Siteroptes qinghaiensis Su, sp. nov.(figs. 1-9)
With respect to the arrangement of dorsal sclerities and chaetotaxy, the species is similar to S. graminisugus, but distinguished by:
Female setae of internal humerales, dorsales, lumbales unequal, and setae of lumbales more than one and a half times as long as setae of internal humerales; setae of medial caudales typically absent; setae of external coxales II longer than the internals; sacks of the sporotheca large, averaging 40-53µ long by 17-21µ wide; open ends of the organ connected by a reversed triangular structure form two broken lines.
Male setae of external humerales shorter, averaging 20-31µ in length; posteriormarginal apodeme complete; solenidion φ2 on tibia I and solenidion φ on tibia IV baculiform, and distinctly longer; setae l on tibia IV less than half of solenidion φ; genu I with four setae; anterior margin of the hysterosomal shield II complete.
Holotype ♀; allotype ♂; paratypes 10♀♀, 10♂♂.
Host: Avena fatua.
Locality: Xining, Qinghai Province, 2261m, 1976. VI. 24. (Su Ti-zhi).
Siteroptes triticola Su, sp. nov. (figs. 10-16)
The new species is similar to S. avenae in some repects; but separated from it mainly through the following:
Female setae of lumbales about two times as long as setae of internal humerales and dorsales; setae of internal coxales II longer than the externals; solenidiona ω1 located behind setae of tk and ω2 behind tb on tarsus I; open parts of the sporotheca are connected by a transverse fold.
Male setae of internal verticales extraordinarily short, 2.8µ; a distinct, irregular apodemelike thickening on propodosomal shield and hysterosomal shield I respectively; setae of lumbales more than two times as long as setae of internal humerales; hysterosomal shield II almost rectangular, broader than long and thickened lateraly; solenidion ω1 located behind setae tk and ω2 behind tb on tarsus I; solenidion φ2 on tibia I baculiform; solenidion φ on tibia IV shorter, and setae l more than half as long as the solenidion.
Holotype ♀; allotype ♂; paratypes 10♀♀, 10♂♂.
Host: Triticum aestivum.
Locality: Dulan, Qinghai Province, 2900m, 1976. VII. 15. (Su Ti-zhi).
Siteroptes huangshuiensis Su, sp. nov. (figs. 17-23)
The mite, especially the female, resembles S. cerealium, but differs from it mainly by:
Female posterior marginal apodeme medially and sternum caudally complete; solenidion φ2 of tibia I located behind φ1; atrium and stigma about equal in length.
Male solenidion φ2 on tibia I longer (6-8µ), baculiform; solenidion φ on tibia II equal to solenidion ω on tarsus II in length (4, 3µ); solenidion φ2 on tibia IV distinctly longer, 10-12µ; a cruciate apodemelike thickening present on hysterosomal shieldl; dorsal plate on the genitoanal region broad obovate; sternum complete caudally.
Holotype ♀; allotype ♂; paratypes 10♀♀, 10♂♂.
Host: Avena fatua.
Locality: Xining, Qinghai Province, 2261m, 1976. VI. 24. (Su Tizhi).
Siteroptes avenae (Muller, 1905)
Collected from Xining and Huangyuan, Qinghai Province, on Aneurolepidium dasystachys, Chinelymus nutans, Triticum aestivum.
Siteroptes reniformis (Krantz, 1957)
Collected from Xining, Qinghai Province on Avena fatua.
