abstractThis paper reports a new genus and species of Tetranychidae collected from China.
Acanthonychus, gen. nov. With three pairs of dorsal propodosomal setae and ten pairs of dorsal hysterosomal setae; all dorsal setae rather strong, with serration and borne on prominent tubercles. Tarsus I with two pairs of duplex setae, tarsus II with one pair. True claw reduced, with a pair of tenent hairs. Empodium curved at right angle and divided into three pairs of hairs in the middle. With one pair of anal setae and two pairs of paraanal setae.
Type-species: Acanthonychus jianfengensis, sp. nov.
This new genus belongs to Tetranychinae and Tetranychini. It is similar to Aponychus Rimando, Atrichoproctus Flechtmann and Palmanychus Baker et Tuttle in bearing only one pair of anal setae, but its dorsal setae and empodium are different in shape from Aponychus and Atrichoproctus; even though it resembles Palmanychus in the shape of empodium, it differs from the latter in the shape of dorsals set on strong tubercles as well as the setae on legs.
Acanthonychus jianfengensis, sp. nov. (figs. 1-12)
Female: Length of body (including rostrum) 416µ width 273µ. Deep green in color.
Palpus with terminal sensillum about one and a half times as long as broad at base; dorsal sensillum shorter than terminal sensillum. Stylophore slightly emarginate distally. Peritreme irregularly anastomosing at distal end.
Integumentary striae transverse on idiosoma and on tubercles. Dorsal propodosomal setae, except the second pairs, borne on small and circular tubercles. Dorsal hysterosomal setae, except the humerals, outer sacrals and clunals, borne on prominent conical tubercles. All dorsals strong, deeply serrated. Opisthosoma with a single pair of nude anals and two pairs of paraanals, borne on small tubercles and bearing pubescence.
Empodium rather long at base, curved at right angle and divided into three pairs of hairs in the middle. Setae on segments of legs numbered as follows: coxae I-IV 2,2,1,1; trochanters I-IV 1 each; femora I-IV 8,7,4,3; genua I-IV 4,4,2,2; tibiae I-IV 10,8,5,5; tarsi I-IV 16,13,9,9.
Male: Aedeagus slender, tapering and curved dorsad.
Holotype ♀, IV. 16. 1974, Hainan Island, Guangdung Province, on Citrus sinensis. Allotype ♂ and Paratypes 7♀♀, collecting data same as for the holotype. All type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica.
