abstractThe present paper gives descriptions of four new species of chigger mites from Mt. Biluo-Xueshan of western Yunnan, at 26°36ʼ N, 99° E.
The diagnostic characters of the four new species are given as follows:
Walchiella alpina, sp. nov. (figs. 1-5)
Idiosoma of engorged larvae measuring 617-655×502-511µ. Galeal setae nude. Palpal setae N-B-BBB+7B.S, palpal claw 3-pronged. Scutum trapezoidal, with scattered small punctae. Sensillae clavate, three times as long as broad. PL>AM>AL. Eyes 2+2, without ocular plate. Dorsal setae 36-40 in number, irregularly arranged as 2-6-10(11,12)-8(6,7,9)-......, in holotype 2-6-11-9-6-4-2=40. Sternal setae 2-2. Ventral setae 41-49 in number. Legs 7-6-6, coxal setae 1-1-1, with 2 genualae on I and without genuala on II and III.
Holotype and 9 paratypes, larvae, collected from ears of Moschus sp. in May, 1978.
This new species having the palpal setae N-B-BBB, PL>AN, 2 genualae on I, no genuala on II and III, is readily separrable from other species of the genus Walchiella.
Microtrombicula petauristae sp. nov. (figs. 6-9)
Idiosoma of partly engorged larvae measuring 570-645×360-430µ. Galeal setae with 1-3 branches. Palpal setae B-B-BBB+6B, palpal claw 2-pronged. Scutum nearly pentagonal in shape, with prominent anterolateral shoulders. Sensillae long, stout, diameter 2.5µ. PL>AM>AL. Eyes 2+2, without ocular plate. Dorsal setae 48-52 in number, irregularly arranged: 4-6(4)-6(4,5)-......, in holotype 4-6-4-4-4-6-8-6-6-4=52. Ventral setae 49-57 in number, sternal setae 2-4, and ventral humeral setae 7-9 pairs. Legs with specialized setae as figured.
Holotype and 3 paratypes, larvas, collected from Petaurista sp. in June, 1978.
This new species having the palpal setae B-B-BBB, 2 pairs of humeral setae, 3 pairs of sternal setae, 7-9 pairs of ventral humeral setae, 48-52 dorsal setae and 49-57ventral setae, is readily separable from the other species of the genus Microtrombicula.
Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium) biluoxueshanensis, sp. nov. (figs. 10-13)
Idiosoma of engorged larvae measuring 425-455×307-375µ. Chelostyle 37-38µ long. Galeal setae with 12-16 branches. Palpal setae N-N-N(b)NN+7B, palpal claw 3-pronged. Scutum rectangular in shape, with punctae on its surface. SB slightly below line of PLs. Sensillae filamentous, distal 2/3 with 12-15 long branches, proximal 1/3 nude. AM>PL>AL. Eyes 2+2 with ocular plate. Dorsal setae 28-30 in number, arranged as 2-8-0(2)-6-6-4-2. Ventral setae 30-39 in number, sternal setae 2-2. Legs with specialized setae as figured.
Holotype and 10 paratypes, larvae, collected from ears of Eothenomys melanogasterin June, 1978.
This new species is allied to L. (L.) zhongdiaense Yu et Yang, 1981, but differsin the sensillae being nude on proximal 1/3, the palpal setae as N-N-N(b)NN, and in the shape and dimensions of scutum.
Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium) longisetum, sp. nov. (figs. 14-17)
Idiosoma of engorged larvae measuring 535-585×443-465µ. Chelostyle 42-46µ long. Galeal setae with 13-15 branches. Palpal setae N-N-BNB+7B, palpal claw 3-pronged. Scutum rectangular in shape, with punctae on its surface. SB slightly below line of PLs. Sensillae long, filamentous, with minute barbs on proximal 1/3, distal 2/3 with 10-12 long lateral branches. AM>PL>AL. Eyes 2+2, with ocular plate. Dorsal setae 46-52 in number, irregularly arranged as 2-10(9,11)-8(9,10)-......, in holotype 2-10-8-2-10-9-4-4-2=51. Ventral setae 45-55 in number, sternal setae 2-2. Legs with specialized setae as figured.
Holotype and 11 paratypes, larvae, collected from ears of Eothenomys melanogasterin June, 1978.
This new species is allied to L. (L.) rupestre Traub et Nadchatram, 1967 but differs in: (1) sensillae longer and with minute barbs on proximal 1/3, (2) SB behind lineof PLs, (3) dimensions of scutum, (4) AM, PL and HS longer.
All type materials are deposited in the Control and Research Institute of Epidemic Diseases of Yunnan Province.
