| abstract | This paper reports a new species of genus Herpetacarus, collected off outer ear of Paguma larvata from Zhejiang Province in 1978.
Herpetacarus (Herpetacarus) tiantai, sp. nov. (figs. 1-6)
Idiosoma of partly engorged larva 890 µ in length and 597 µ in width.
Gnathosoma: cheliceral claw with an inverted tricuspid cap and a small dorsal tooth, galeal setae nude, palpal setae: B.B.BBB+7BS.
Scutum: anterior margin convex mediallly and slightly concave laterally, posterior margin slightly convex. PL>AM>AL. Sensilla lanceolate, with 9-10 rows of setules around its base.
Standard measurements (average): AW 82, PW 101, SB 32, ASB 44, PSB 30, AP 53, AM 65, AL 60, PL 82, Sn 60×7.
Dorsal setae: long, slender, with short coarse branches, irregularly arranged: 2-11-11-4-10-9-6-4-4=61 or 2-12-11-11-8-6-44=58, humeral setae 82 µ. in length, anterior dorsal setae 66 µ, posterior dorsal setae 59 µ.
Ventral setae: 74, 55 in front of and 19 behind anus, anterior ventral setae 34 µ, posterior ventral setae 58 µ.
Legs: I 372 µ ; II 343 µ; III 413 µ.
Holotype and 3 paratypes: larvae, collected off outer ear of Paguma larvata on November 17, 1978, from Tiantai, Zhejiang Province, deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
This new species is similar to H. (H.) aristatochlavus Yu et al., 1979 and H. (H.) spinosetosus Wang et al., 1980, but the scutum of H. (H.) aristatochlavus is more elongate and its standard measurements are greater than those of the new species; the sensillae of H. (H.) spinosetosus are long and slender and its palpal setae: B.B.BNB. |
