abstractThe present paper describes a new species of the genus Bryobia from Xinjiang, China. Type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, and in the Xinjiang Uygur First Agricultural College respectively.
Bryobia populi, sp. nov. (figs. 1-10)
Female: Length (including rostrum) 673µ, width 433µ.
Propodosomal lobes weakly developed, outer lobes triangular, inner lobes tubercular, higher than outer ones, notches between inner lobes rather shallow.
Claw of the tibia of palp cleft. Peritreme enlarged at the end, irregular, with tubular striae and holes on the surface.
With 16 pairs of dorsal setae, all spatulate, broadly round at the end, with serration. Dorsal integument on propodosoma granulated and strongly wrinkled on metapodosoma, but transversal between dorsocentrals.
Length of leg I shorter than body. Each claw of legs with a pair of tenent hairs. Empodium I short and pad-like, with a pair of tenent hairs, empodia II-IV longer, with two rows of ventral tenent hairs. Duplex setae on tarsus III consisting of a distal long sensory seta and an associated shorter tactile seta. But on tarsus IV these setae reversed in position, subequal in length and set separately.
Holotype ♀, paratypes 7♂♂, 5. VIII. 1981, Emin County (46° N, 83°E), Xinjiang, on Populus sp.
This new species resembles B. oblonga Livschitz et Mitrofanov (1968) in the weakly developed propodosomal lobes and the position of sensory seta on tarsus IV, but differs from the latter in: 1. propodosomal lobes rather wide, notches between inner lobes and outer ones shallow and wide; 2. peritreme enlarged at the end; 3. tibia III and IV each with 9 setae.
