| abstract | Nine feather mite species assigned to the family Falculiferidae (excluding Falculifer) were found on West Indies Columbiformes. Four of these species are new and herein described. Most of them are associated with ground doves. Both Columbina passerina and C. talpacoti harbour Byersalges phyllophorus Gaud and Barre 1988, Byersalges talpacoti (Cerny 1975), Hyperaspidus tridentatus Atyeo and Smith 1983 and Pterophagus lomatus, n. sp. One of these mites, B. talpacoti, was also found on Zenaida aurita from Cuba. Geotrygon mystacea harbours three new species: Atyeonia aporonota, Nanolichus nesothyrus and Pterophagus spilosikyus. Atyeonia bifurcata Gaud 1966, a mite associated with Leptotila verreauxi, was not recovered in the course of our survey. Pterophagoides paradoxus Gaud and Barre 1988, found on the domestic pigeon in Martinique and Guyana, was originally supposed to have a New World Columbiforme as a primary wild host. The present study do not support this hypothesis. |
