abstractA new genus and new species of tarsonemid mite, Excelsotarsonemus kaliszewskii, is described from Costa Rica. Phylogenetic analysis using parsimony (PAUP) based on of Lindquistʼs (1986) transformation series was performed. The genus Excelsotarsonemus is hypothesized to be the sister group of the genus Daidalotarsonemus. Although E. kaliszewskii was collected from cultivated Theobroma cacao on the campus of the Centro Agronomico Tropical de Investigacion y Ensenanza (CATIE), Turrialba, Costa Rica, it is likely to be indigenous to tropical forests in the region.
