| abstract | The present paper gives descriptions of five new species of chigger mites from Yunnan, China. All type specimens are deposited in the Control and Research Institute of Epidemic Diseases of Yunnan Province.
l Herpetacarus (Herpetacams) bisetus sp. nov. (Fig. 1)
Host: Holotype and 3 paratypes, larvae, ex Neotetracus sinensis. Location: Out ear.
Locality: Lushui County (25.99°N, 98.77°E, alt. 2800 m), Yunnan, 9. XI. 1985.

Diagnosis: This new species is close to H. (H.) tengchongensis Yu, Yang et Tu, 1980, but differs in: 1) formula of coxal setae 1-1-2, not 1-1-l; 2) DS= 59-63 in number, not 52-56; 3) galeal seta with 8-10 branches not 5-6.
2 Herpetacaras (Herpetacarus) lushuiensis sp. nov. (Fig. 2)
Host: Holotype and 9 paratypes, larvae, ex Rattus confucianus and R. andersoni. Location: Out ear.
Locality: Lushui County (25.97°N, 98.77°E, alt. 2800 m), Yunnan, 10. XI. 1985.

Diagnosis: This new species is close to H. (H. ) tengchongensis Yu, Yang et Tu, 1980, but differs in: 1) DS= 77-89 in number, not 52-56; 2) PL>AL>AM, not AL>PL>AM; 3) SB-PLs, not SB/PLs.
3 Lorillatum hekouensis sp. nov. (Fig. 3)
Host: Holotype and 1 paratype, larvae, ex Rattus flavipectus. Location: Out ear.
Locality: Hekou County (22.51°N, 103.98°E, alt. 76 m), Yunnan, 10. XI. 1969.

Diagnosis: This new species is close to L. oreophilum Nadchatram Traub, 1964, but differs in: 1) formula of mastisetae l-1-1-1, not 1-2-1-l; 2) DS= 48-50 in number, not 42; 3) VS= 39 in number, not 32; 4) PW/SD= 1.47, not 1.91; 5) scutal, dorsal and ventral setae longer.
4 Ascoschoengastia gengmaensis sp. nov. (Fig. 4)
Host: Holotype and 6 paratypes, larvae, ex Rattus flavipectus. Location: Out ear.
Locality: Gengma County (23.53°N, 99.40°E, alt. 700m), Yunnan, IX. 1970.

Diagnosis: This new species is close to A. yunnanensis Yu, Yang et Tu, 1980, but differs in: 1) mastitarsala mt= 1, not 0; 2) fDS= 2-(6+2)-6-....= 35-38, not 2-6-4-....= 24-27; 3) VS= 37-44 in number, not 27-34; 4) Sn= 32×11 µm, not 36-9µm.
5 Ascoschoengastia qiaojiaensis sp. nov. (Fig. 5)
Host: Holotype and 9 paratypes, larvae, ex Rattus flavipectus. Location: Out ear.
Locality: Qiaojia County (26.91°N, 102.91°E, alt. 650 m), Yunnan, IX. 1973.
