| abstract | A new species of the ptychoid oribatid mite family Euphthiracaridae is described based on adult specimens collected from decayed wood of a tree stump (Tilia americana Linn.). Euphthiracarus cooki sp. nov. is currently known only from its type locality near Detroit, in southeastern Michigan, and another site in central New York State. It is a member of a monodactylous species group that includes three other species in North America; a diagnostic key to the group is presented. Discussion of new or poorly known aspects of Euphthiracarus morphology relates to the presence of an anogenital cleft and a dorsally placed, often overlooked seta on coxistemum IV. Misapplications of leg setal nomenclature in the literature are corrected. |
