abstractNew records, mainly from Southern Europe, complement our knowledge of the distribution and habitat preference of ten water mite species belonging to the genera Albaxona, Axonopsis, Barbaxonella and Erebaxonopsis, and include new findings for the national faunas of Greece, Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain and Morocco. Axonopsis schwoerbeli is described as a new species. For the first time, a deutonymph of a species of the genus Albaxona Szalay, 1944 is described (A. lundbladi Motas, & Tanasachi, 1947). The following synonyms are proposed: Vetsaxona Motas, & Tanasachi, 1948 = Albaxona Szalay, 1944; Albaxona gracilis Schwoerbel, 1962 = Albaxona lundbladi Motas, & Tanasachi, 1947; Axonopsis monstrabilis Biesiadka, 1975 = Axonopsis inferorum Motas, & Tanasachi, 1947; Axonopsis dantei Di Sabatino, 1994 = Axonopsis vietsi Motas, & Tanasachi, 1947. Most of the records published here are from samples taken from the hyporheic interstitial.
