abstractAvenzoaria canuti sp. n., a new species of the feather mite family Avenzoariidae (Acari: Astigmata: Analgoidea) is described from the flight feathers of the Red Knot, Calidris canutus (L.) (Scolopacidae, Charadriiformes). Up to now the new species has been identified as Avenzoaria calidridis (Oudemans, 1904), a typical commensal of calidrine sandpipers. A. canuti sp. n. is an intermediate form sharing some characters with both A. calidridis and A. totani (Canestrini, 1878), a common feather mite of tringine sandpipers (Scolopacidae).
