| abstract | A larva agreeing closely with Charletonia singularis Oudemans was found on a noctuid moth Simyra henrici (Grote), light trapped in Massachusetts. The deutonymph reared from this larva conforms to Sphaerolophus cardinalis (Koch) as redescribed by Franke. Larval cuticle and nymph agree also with larval and postlarval mites reared in Germany by Witte and identified by him as S. cardinalis. Use of the generic name Charletonia rather than Sphaerolophus is considered appropriate for this species as well as for that reared by Ishii in 1953 and for that reared by Rosa and Flechtmann in 1979, but not necessarily for species in which correlation of larval with postlarval instars has not yet been achieved. It appears probable that Charletonia singularis is the larval form of cardinalis. |
