abstractA preliminary list of 128 species in 93 genera, 40 families and 4 suborders of soil-inhabiting mites is presented based on a partial study of available collections taken from the Samar Ilsnad Natural Park in 2002-2003. Of these, 102 belong to 32 families of the suborder Oribatida, the most dominant group of soil microarthropods. Thirteen species or predatory mites belonigng to the family Cunaxidae are also indentified but the suborders Gamasida and Acaridida are barely represented by 7 and 1 species respectively. The oribatid mite, Nixozetes samarensis Corpuz-Raros is described as a new species while Dendrohermannia monstruosa (Aoki) is reported as a new record for the Philippines. Indoribates apoensis (Corpuz-Raros) is transferred from Nixozetes, with taxonomic notes on the Nixozetes-group of genera in the family Haplozetidae.
