| abstract | Two new species of Whartonia from Kwangtung are described as follows:
1. Whartonia recurvata sp. nov.(Figs. 1-10)
Body yellow with red eyes when living, and white with colorless eyes when preserved. It is broad oval measuring 0.715 mm long and 0.602 mm broadest (average of three specimens).
Capitulum: Chelicera large, distal segment curved and pointed. Blade provided dorsally with 7 recurved teeth, becoming somewhat smaller distally. Tricuspid cap provided with about 13 minute teeth, much smaller than those on the blade, the distal 4 or 5 becoming so small as to appear in dots. Galeal setae nude. Seta on palpal femur with 1-3 setules. Seta on genu nude. Dorsal seta on tibia large and with short setules distributed from near base to tip. Lateral and ventral setae small and nude. Tarsus with 7 plumose setae, all with short branches from near base to tip, and 1 sensory rod. Palpal claw 4-5 pointed, main prong longer and larger, and in center accessory prongs shorter and smaller.
Scutum: Scutum broader than long, approximately rectangular. Surface punctate. Behind each stnsilla, to its outer margin may be seen an irregular group of short spines. Anterior margin of;en slightly concave or biconcave, posterior margin biconvex, lateral margin distinctly concave. PW greater than AW. SM double. AL and PL with more setules than AM, all distributed from some distance from base to tip. PL>SM>AL. Sensillae filiform, with at most 1-2 tiny setules on distal half. Sensilla bases slightly posterior to PL.
Standard measurements of three Specimens in microns: AW 85, PW 98, SB 37, ASM 29, PSB 12, AP 21, SM 55, AL 47, PL 75, DS 60-77, VS 39-68.
Dorsum: Eyes large, two on each side, touching posterior level of scutum, but almost on lateral side of body.
Dorsal setae: DS plumose with short setules distributed a little distance from base to tip. Size about same in all. Number and arrangement of setae apparently vary somewhat. They are given as follows:
Specimen 1. 2-4-8-11-9-6-5-2 = 47
Spccimen 2 2-6-6-11-9-6-4-2-1 = 47
Specimen 3. 2-6-8-8-10-4-4-2-1 = 45
Venter: All setae plumose. Small paired setae on gnathosoma. Coxa I with 2 setae, coxa II and III, each with one. Between coxa II and III, 4 setae, and between coxa III a pair of sternal setae. Behind coxa III, number of setae varies and without definite arrangement, three specimens possessing 41, 42 and 43 setae respectively.
Legs: All with 6 segments. Length including coxae for leg I 0.389, leg II 0.352, leg III 0.406. Tarsus I and II each with a sensory rod and a pretarsala, tarsus I with one subterminala and one parasubterminala, tarsus II with a microspur and tarsus III without a long nude seta. Claws and empodium normal.
The specimens were collected from the wings of bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus & Hipposideros poutensis), Mapa, Kukong, Kwangtung Province. Type and paratypes no. c56-1 (1-7) deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Chungshan Medical College, Canton.
Up to the time of writing, five species of Whartonia have been described, and the present species is somewhat similar to W. penthetor and W. vellae but differs from them in having PW>AW, much smaller AP, palpal claw 4-5 pronged, smaller number of setae between coxae II and coxae III, and several other characters. The species under consideration appears new to science and the name Whartonia recurvata sp. nov. is proposed.
2. Whartonia mapaensis sp. nov.(Figs. 11-18)
Body whitish, elongated, dorsal surface with fine wavy annulations. Length of capitulum 0.297 mm., and of idiosoma 0.596 mm. Total length 705.2 µ.
Setae on palpal femur, genu and tibia appear all ciliated, only those on femur are fairly long. On tarsus are 7 setae, all ciliated, and one sensory rod. Cheliceral claws trifurcate, ventral prong by far the longest, the 2 other prongs are rather small. Galeal setae nude.
Eyes double, about equal in size (21.8 µ × 20.3 µ), close to level of posterior border of scutum, and far off to near lateral side.
Scutum about rectangular, anterior margin slightly concave, posterior margin biconvex. Surface punctate. Between base of sensillae and posterior margin is a transvere crest, its length slightly greater than distance between sensilla bases. Eyebrows inconspicuus and immediately above and very close to sensilla base.
Setae on scutum all ciliated. Sensillae dropped. Standard measurements (in microns): AW 106.1, PW 113.9, SB 45.2, ASB 46, PSB 12.4, AP 37.4, SM 93.6, AL 92, PL 104.5.
DS 54 in number, all ciliated, arranged 8-8-8-8-2-6-4-2-4-4, anterior ones slightly longer. Longest 111.15 µ, shortest 78.66 µ. VS 68 in number, all ciliated, anterior ones smaller.
Setae on gnathosoma plumose. Two plumose setae on coxa I, one on coxa II and III. Paired plumose setae between coxae III. 8 plumose setae in two rows (4-4) between coxae II and III.
All legs with 6 segments, I 718.2 µ, II 649.8 µ, III 778 µ. Leg I: tarsus with one pretarsala one subterminala one parasubterminala and one spur, tibia with two tibialae, genu with two mastigenualae and one genuala. Leg II: tarsus with one spur and one microspur, tibia with two tibialae, genu with one mastigenuala and one genuala. Leg III: tarus without a long nude seta, tibia with one mastitibiala, genu with one mastigenuala. Claws and empodium normal.
The specimen was collected from the wing of a bat (Hipposideros poutensis), Mapa, Kukong, Kwangtung Province. The type specimen no. c56-3 deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Chungshan Medical College, Canton.
The present species is somewhat similar to Whartonia vellae but differs from it in having PW>AW, much smaller standard measurements and larger number of DS and VS. The species appears new to science and the name Whartonia mapaensis sp.nov. is proposed. |
