abstractThis work deals with taxonomy, geographical distribution as well as known ecology of oribatid mites of the genus Costeremus Aoki, 1970 in the world. All species belonging to this genus were known to be distributed in eastern Asia. The species of Costeremus are inhabitants of the litter of various types of forests, consisting mostly of broad-leaved trees. A new species, Costeremus stebaevae sp. nov. is described from the moss-lichen cover growing on the soil of cold tundra habitat in Mt. Kuznetsk Alatau, Khakassiya, Republic of Russia in Southern Siberia. Thus, Costeremus is recorded for the first time from outside of the eastern Asia. The family placement of Costeremus is briefly discussed. Furthermore, a key is provided for the identification of adults of the two genera of Hungarobelbidae and known species of Costeremus in the world.
