| abstract | Maps given of the distribution of the economically important phytophagous mite species associated with cotton in Moçambique and South Africa.
Techniques for collecting, preserving and mounting mites are described.
A key is given to the identification in the field of the various kinds of mites associated with cotton.
Collections from different parts of Moçambique and South Africa determined the presence of at least 15 species of phytophagous and a number of predacious mites.
Three new species of phytophagous mites, namely Eotetranychus falcatus, Tetranychus amicus and T. zambezianus are described and figured.
Other new species described and figured are: Amblyseius violini, A. baetae, A. magucii, A. spinosus, Pronematulus rusticus, Pronematus tenuisetosus, P. rykei, Parapronematus geminus, Tydeus spathatus, Oulenzia gossypii and Tyrophagus africanus. A new genus of Naudea with a new species, N. richinda as type species is described under Tydeidae. Collections made from other plants, including wild plants, are mentioned under each species. |
