abstractThe present paper deals with five species of the genus Haemolaelaps Berlese collected from various parts of China. H. orientalis and H. cordatus are described as new to science, H. traubi (Strandtmann) and H. semidesertus Bregetova are recorded for the first time from this country, and H. triangularis Wang is recognized for the first time in male and deutonymph. A key is appended for the identification of the ten known Chinese species of the genus. The types of the two new species are deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, Peking.
Haemolaelaps orientalis, sp. nov.
Female (Figs. 1-4): Idiosoma oval, length 727-807µ, width 468-503µ. Dorsal plate oval, 725-801µ long, 421-468µ wide; covering almost the entire dorsum; with 39 pairs of setae, most of them not longer than the longitudinal distance between their bases. Pilus dentilis leaflet-like, pointed and slightly curved apically. Sternal plate 79µ long (at middle), 145µ wide (at the narrowest point); anterior margin convex at middle; posterior margin concave; the first pair of sternal setae (St1) situated on presternal area are shorter than the other two pairs; the anterior pair of slit-like pores situated at the anterior margin of the plate. Genitoventral plate elongated, slightly expanded behind coxae IV, and approaching anal plate; length 394µ, width 122µ; sculptured as figured. Anal plate triangular, nearly as long as wide, with antero-lateral corners broadly rounded; the paired setae situated behind the middle of anus, being slightly shorter than the posterior one. Peritreme long, extending anteriorly to the middle of coxa I. Metapodal plate kidney-shaped. The naked area of venter behind coxae IV with about 15-18 pairs of setae. All legs rather strong, leg II being stouter than the others. Tarsus IV with a long proximal seta.
Holotype (?) collected off Tupaia glis Diard in February, 1957, from Yunnan Province. Paratypes (10??) collected off Callosciurus swinhoei hainanus J. Allen, Dremomys rufigenis rufigenis Blanford, Hylomys suillus peguensis Blyth and Rattus losea celsus G. Allen from February to April, 1957, from Yunnan Province; 2?? collected off Tamiops swinhoei maritinus (Bonhote) in July, 1963, from Fukien Province.
This species resembles H. argentiventer Baker et al., but its idiosoma is larger insize, sternal plate distinctly delineated anteriorly, tarsus IV with a long proximal seta, the setae at posterior end of the body subequal, and the teeth on the movable digit rather small.
Haemolaelaps cordatus, sp. nov.
Female (Figs. 5-8): Idiosoma oval, length 655µ, width 415µ. Dorsal plate covering almost the entire dorsum; 620µ long, 391µ wide; with 39 pairs of principal setae and a single accessory seta situated between D7 and D8, most of which, with the exception of M11, are rather weak. Pilus dentilis straight, spine-like. Sternal plate 94µ long (at middle), 122µ wide (at the narrowest point); anterior margin roughly straight, but very slightly incurved at the middle; posterior margin weakly concave; St1 situated on anterior margin of the plate, being shorter than the other pairs; St2 subequal to St3 and not reaching the posterior margin of the plate. Genitoventral plate rather elongated, slightly expanded behind coxae IV; 338µ long, 122µ wide; very faintly sculptured in the two specimens examined. Distance between genitoventral and anal plates about 23.5µ, being shorter than the length of anus. Anal plate heart-shaped, length 103µ, width 89µ; 3 anal setae subequal, the paired one situated a litt1e in front of the middle of anus. Peritreme extending anteriorly to the hind portion of coxa I. Metapodal plate elongated. Unsclerotized portion behind coxae IV with about 15 pairs of setae. Legs I and IV much slender than the other two pairs. The claws of all legs rather small. Tarsus IV without long proximal seta.
Holotype (?) and paratype (1?) collected off Rattus losea celsus G. Allen in April, 1957 and in May, 1962, from Yunnan Province. This species is similar to H. morlani Strandtmann, but its genitoventral plate is longer and narrower, 305µ long (from base of sternal plate to tip of genitovenral plate), 122µ wide, the distance between genitoventral and anal plates is much shorter, and its anal plate is also different in form
Haemolaelaps triangularis Wang, 1963
Male and deutonymph are illustrated in figs. 9-12.
