| abstract | In the winter of 1960, among the collections of nidicolous gamasoid mites obtained from the vicinity of Huainan City of Anhui Province, a female eviphid mite was found in a synoekete nest dwelled by two Apodemus agrarius and a Crocidura attenuata. This mite is regarded as a new species, with diagnostic characters as follows:
Eviphis (s. str.) huainanensis Wen, sp. nov.
Scutum elliptical in shape, light gold-yellowish in colour, measuring 523×355µ. Dorsal setae spine-like, 30 pairs in number. Marginal setae long and also spine-like, but not lanceolate. The third sternal and the posterior setae of coxae II and III spur-like. Sternal plate relatively short with its postero-lateral angles sharply pointed and posterior margin straight. The fused metasterni-endopodal plates located very close to, but not fused, with the sternal plate. Geniti-ventral plate short, with a flask-like sub-rotund posterior end and the paired genital setae protruded outwardly at the lateral margin. Anal plate skull-like in shape with the posterior margin almost straight and a transparent post-cribral area. Posterior part of peritreme broadest immediately before the stigma. Peritrematal plate not very broad, extending posteriorly somewhat beyond the free metapodal plate. The paired jugulariae very faintly sclerotized and each ornamented with two parallel oblique-running lines and densely scattered with fine punctae.
Tectum hastate, the base of its slender distal portion supported by a proximal transparent tubercle. Chelicera slender, weakly sclerotized, with the second segment very longand chela short. Base of retracted cheliceral shaft almost extending to a level approximating the anterior margin of the geniti-ventral plate. Palptarsus with a pair of S-shaped rodlike setae at its tips. Palptrochanter with a specialized forked seta on its ventral surface, consisting of a very short conical stem with a very long filamentous offshoot sub-apically. Each of palpgenua and palpfemora without a chisel-shaped seta.
Setae on leg I slender, with those on II-IV stouter. Dorsal surface of tarsus I with a terminal tuft of setae blended with three rod-like ones. Ventral surface of tarsus II and III with a pair of stout claw-like setae at its tip. Dorsal anterior margin of femora I and II with a pair of stout spine-like setae. |
