abstractThe present paper gives detailed descriptions of the five new species of chigger mites parasitic on rats from Kiangsi, Anhwei, and Yunnan Provinces in China.
Gahrliepia (Gahrliepia) kiangsiensis Hsu, Hsu et Wen, sp. nov. (Figs. 1-4)
Idiosoma of unengorged larva 238×182µ; eyes 2+2, small, without ocular plate. Scutum hexagonal with fine punctations and transversely arranged small rod-like scrobiculi. Scutal setae 14, arranged 2-2-4-2-2-2. Sensillae club-shaped. Palpal setae B/b(N)/NNN. Galeal setae nude, palpal claw 3-forked. Dorsal setae 28, arranged 2-6-6-6-4-2-2. Sternal setae 2-2, ventral setae 52. Leg segments 7-6-6, coxal setae 1-1-1. Leg III with postero-ventral femoral seta nude. Standard measurements: AW=46, PW=81, SB=47, ASB=23, PSB=96, SD=119, AP=40, AL=33,PL=46, S=36 (with head 13/27).
Holotype collected from the outer ear of Rattus losea on November 10, 1960, from Kiangsi Province; deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
Gahrliepia (Gahrliepia) radiopunctata Hsu, Hsu et Wen, sp. nov. (Figs. 5-8)
Idiosoma of partly engorged larvae 392-434×266-332µ. Eyes 2+2, small, without ocular plate. Scutum elongate hexaponal in shape. Scutal surface with fine punctations, with irregularly arranged scrobiculi beneath its surface, with radially arranged elongate striations in front its anterior margin. Scutal setae 14-15, arranged 2-2-2(3)-4-2-2. Sensillae club-shaped. Palpal setae b/b(N)/NNN, galeal setae nude, palpal claw 3-forked. Gnathosomal base comparatively narrow and long. Dorsal setae 34, arranged 2-4-6-6-6-4-4-2. Sternal setae 2-2, rather long; ventral setae 50. Leg segments 7-6-6, coxal setae 1-1-1. Leg III with postero-ventral femoral seta 4-5 branched on both sides. Standard measurements: AW=44, PW=74, SB=43, ASB=21, PSB=119,SD=140, AP=39, AL=35, PL=40, S=?.
Holotype and 1 paratype collected from the outer ear of Apodemus agrarius on November 29, 1961, from Anhwei Province; deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
Gahrliepia (Gahrliepia) agrariusia Hsu, Hsu et Wen, sp. nov. (Figs. 9-12)
Idiosoma of partly engorged larva 388×280µ. Eyes 2+2, small and without ocular plate. Scutum elongate, hexagonal in shape; scutal setae 14, including one pair of antero-laterals, one pair of postero-laterals and ten accessory setae; arranged 2-2-2-4-4-2-2. Sensillae elongate club-shaped. Palpal setae B/N/NNN, galeal setae nude, palpal claw 3-forked. Dorsal setae 34, arranged 2-4-6-6-6-6-2-2. Sternal setae 2-2, rather long; ventral setae 46. Leg segments 7-6-6, coxal setae 1-1-1. Leg III with fine short branched postero-ventral femoral seta. Standard measurements: AW=47, PW=77, SB=46, ASB=21, PSB=136, SD=157, AP=36, AL=41, PL=43, S=37 (with head 10/29).
Holotype collected from the outer ear of Apodemus agrarius on December 19, 1961, from Anhwei Province; deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
Gahrliepia (Gahrliepia) yunnanensis Hsu, Hsu et Weu. sp. nov. (Figs. 13-17)
Idiosoma of partly engorged larva 388×294µ. Eyes 2+2, without ocular plate. Scutum large and long, hexagonal in shape. Scutal setae 18, including one pair of antero-laterals, one pair of postero-laterals and 14 accessory setae; last pair situated at the margin of two postero-lateral corners; arranged 2-2-2-4-4-2-2. Sensillae club-shaped. Palpal setae B/N(b)/NNN, galeal setae nude, palpal claw 3-forked. Dorsal setae 44, arranged 2-4-6-8-8-6-6-4. Sternal setae 2-2; ventral setae 66, arranged 16-12-10-6-8-6-6-2. Leg segments 7-6-6, coxal setae 1-1-1. Leg III with poster-ventral femoral seta nude, leg II with micro-tarsala situated immediately behind tarsala. Standard measurements: AW=43, PW=73, SB=41, ASB=21, PSB=120, SD=141, AP=39, AL=36, PL=39, S=?.
Holotype collected from Rattus flavipectus in August 1958, from Yunnan Province; deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
Gahrliepia (Gahrliepia) megascuta Hsu, Hsu et Wen, sp. nov. (Figs. 18-22)
Idiosoma of unengorged larvae 346-394×266-406µ. Eyes 2+2, very small, without ocular plate. Scutum large, long, and shield-like. Scutal setae 24-28, arranged 2-2-4-6(7)-4(5,6)-4-2-(2). Sensillae with elongate large club-like head, twice longer than broad. Palpal setae b/N(b)/NNN. Gnathosomal base comparatively broad, galeal setae nude, palpal claw 3-forked. Dorsal setae 50, arranged 4-6-8-10-8-4-6-4. Ventral setae 70. Leg segments 7-6-6, coxal setae 1-1-1. Leg III with postero-ventral seta of femoral segment with 2-4 branched on both sids. Standard measurements: AW=60, PW=106, SB=60, ASB=29, PSB=152, SC=181, AP=47, AL=44, PL=48, S=53 (with head 15/31).
Holotype and 2 paratypes collected from Rattus flavipectus on October 1960, from Yunnan Province; deposited in the Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
