abstractThe genus Ichoronyssus Kolenati, 1858, considered by the writer in a broader sense, is composed of 4 subgenera, namely Ichoronyssus Kolenati, 1858 (s. str.), Hirstesia (Fonseca, 1948), Bianyssus Wen, sg. nov. and Spinolaelaps (Radford, 1940). The diagnostic characteristics are as follows:
Subgenus Ichoronyssus Kolenati, 1858
Type Ichoronyssus scutatus (Kolenati, 1858) Female with sternal organs regularly, genitoventral plate having scale-like lines and only one pair of setae. Male ventral plate fused with anal plate either far apart from sternogenital plate or separated from it by a transverse line.
Subgenus Hirstesia (Fonseca, 1948)
Type Hirstesia sternalis (Hirst, 1921) Female with sternal organs, genitoventral plate having a network of striations at the upper half and some parallel sinuous lines around the posterolateral margin, and bearing 4-6 genitoventral setae. Male ventral plate fused with anal plate.
Subgenus Bianyssus Wen, sg. nov.
Type Ichoronyssus (Bianyssus) ventralis Wen, sp. nov. Female with sternal organs, genitoventral plate divided into 2 regions and bearing 9 setae. Male ventral plate island-like, just posterior to sternogenital plate and bearing 5 setae. Ventral pleural setae numerous, each with a setal platelet.
Subgenus Spinolaelaps (Radford, 1940)
Type Spinolaelaps jacksoni Radford, 1940 Female genitoventral plate having a network of transverse striations and bearing 5-11 setae. Male ventral plate fused with anal plate; ventral pleural setae each with a setal platelet.
A new species belonging subgenus Bianyssus is described, and the diagnostic characteristics are as follows:
Ichoronyssus (Bianyssus) Ventralis Wen, sp. nov. (Figs. 1-19)
Diagnosis: Female with sternal organs. Genitoventral plate divided into two regions and bearing 9 setae. Digitus fixus of chela enlarged at its tip and with 5 hair-like extensions. Coxa I with 2 specialized spines of which one projected forward and another backward, with their bases connected each other. Male ventral plate island-like just behind sternogenital plate and bearing 5 setae; anterodorsal spine of coxa II long and with a recurved cap. Adults and protonymph with both coxal ventral semicircular elevations and sharp spines.
Host: Rhinolophus ferrumequinum.
Locality: Yixing, Kiangsu Province, China.
Type material: Holotype (?), Allotype (?), 1 paratype (?) and 2 paratypes of protonymph. Deposited in Department of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College.
Note: The subgeneric name is derived from the latinized Chinese term bian for bat, and Latin term nyssus for prick.
