| abstract | A new genus and species of Rosensteiniidae, Chiroptoglyphus americanus, are described from North American bats. This genus is made the basis for the new subfamily CHIROPTOGLYPHINAE. Nycteriglyphus bulgaricus Dusbabek is transferred to Chiroptoglyphus. Chiroptoglyphus americanus males are very different from females, having greatly enlarged legs I; this development is subject to allometric growth and not a result of andropoly-morphism. The species inhabits the fur of hibernating bats where it feeds, molts and reproduces; it is not dependent on guano as are nycteriglyphine species. The systematic position of the Rosensteiniidae is discussed and a new definition of the family and key to genera are presented. |
