| abstract | In this second part of a review of the Listrophoroidea of Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and tropical South America [see RAE/B 64, 961], 68 species in 17 genera of Atopomelidae are reviewed, with descriptions of 4 new genera, 3 new species and 5 new subspecies from the adults, and notes on other taxonomic changes and on hosts and localities of collection. Of these species, 22 (in 6 genera) are parasites of marsupials, 28 (in 7 genera) and parasites of rodents, and 9 (in 1 genus) on monkeys (mainly from South America); an attempt is made to trace the evolutionary relationships between these groups attached to different hosts. Keys are given to the genera of the family and to species of the largest genera. At the end of the paper, a table is presented, containing a list of species of American Atopomelidae, with the name and family of the hosts, and the place of collection, of each species. |
