abstractA new family of oribatid mites, Nehypochthoniidae, with Nehypochthonius porosus n. gen., n.sp. as type-species, is described and figured. The known distribution is South Carolina and Florida. Certain aspects of body articulations and leg setation suggest the possibility that the species is an early derivative of a group ancestral to the Euphthiracaroidea.
